The Chinese lunar calendar is considered to be the longest chronological record of time, dating back to 2637 BC when the zodiac was first introduced. Divided into a twelve-year cycle, each Chinese lunar year is represented by an animal or sign. When Lord Buddha was about to reach the final level of enlightenment, he requested a meeting with all the animals of the world so he could bless them. But only twelve animals came. In recognition of their devotion, Lord Buddha named each year of the twelve-year cycle in their honor. Each year is named according to the order in which the animals appeared before him. Similar to western astrology, the characteristics of the animal that rules a particular year will define a person from that birth-year.
