Phoenix, Feng Huang, King of Birds
FengHuang is the Chinese name for what people in the West call the Phoenix. Feng is the male phoenix while the female is Huang. These are mythological birds of East Asia; they reign over all other birds. In present times, there is no distinction between the male and female, both Feng and Huang are blurred into one feminine entity. The Chinese phoenix is often paired with the Chinese dragon, which has male features.
FengHuang has combined look of many birds; head of a golden pheasant, body of a mandarin duck, peacock’s tail, and legs of a crane, mouth of a parrot and wings of a swallow. Its body is symbolic of six celestial bodies; eyes are the sun, the back is the moon, wings are the wind, the feet are the tail is the planets. Its feathers has the five important colors; white, red, blue, yellow &black. Sometimes the Chinese phoenix is shown as having three legs. According to Chinese tradition, it’s believed to be living on top of the Kunlun Mountains in Northern China.
History
It was during 2600 B.C, the feng huang first appeared to the Chinese emperor Hung Ti. Feng Huang only appear during times of peace and prosperity, which is usually when a new emperor ascend the throne. The Chinese phoenix is one of the four celestial creatures, believed by the Chinese to have created the world. When the world was created, the heavens was divided into four quadrants; north, s south east and west; Feng huang ruled over the southern quadrant of heaven, symbolic of summer and sun. During the Han Dynasty era, 2200 years ago, twp phoenix, a male and female were depicted facing each other. It was during the Yuan dynasty, the two merged to become the phoenix, emperor of birds. This was later termed as empress when shown with a dragon where the dragon was the emperor.
