Balinese Umbrellas, Parasols

Tedung is the Balinese word for the colorful paper umbrellas used primarily for auspicious events and Hindu religious ceremonies. Meaning "to guard," these umbrellas are used in parades where they are aligned around various shrines. The color of the umbrella reflects upon what kind of ceremony is occurring.

Although there aren't conclusive reports on the origins of Balinese Umbrellas, legend has it that in the 13th Century, a fair Chinese princess visited the island and used an umbrella to protect her delicate skin from harmful sun rays.
