They are residents of two realms such as it starts with water, and moves to the air with maturity, but stays close to water[1].

Symbolic Meaning of the Dragonfly
The symbolic meanings of dragonflies are somewhat associated with both Asian (Japanese) and Native American (Plains region) beliefs. They say that as a figure of the wind, a dragonfly symbolizes change and with its wings that are sensitive to slight breezes, it remind us that we too should pay attention to where the wind blows us in life[6].

The love for dragonflies is reflected in the fact that there are traditional names for almost all of the 200 species of dragonflies found in and around Japan [1]. Japanese children grab dragonflies as a game, using a hair with a small pebble tied to each end, which they throw into the air.

As a symbol of courage, Japanese boys are given the name of "Tombo" which means dragonfly. Even the shape of the archipelago of Japan on a map is also said to be that of a dragonfly[1].
