In the early Chinese era, Chinese wall fans have many purposes aside from keeping any rooms cool. Over 3,000 years ago, royal families requested long-shafted fans made out of real birds’ feathers for courtyard performances and ceremonies. Scholars then found out that folding fans are fit for writing or painting. Chinese craftsmen and artists convey their artworks by drawing and writing on the oriental fans. Oriental fans can be both a collectable art and a lovely wall decor. Also, Chinese people thought that fans are excellent for Feng Shui!

It is somewhat common that leaves and bird feathers were used as fans during the ancient times, but China gets recognition for being the first place where fans were manufactured. King Wu of the Zhou Dynasty (11th century B.C.) is recognized to be the first to invent the Chinese fan. Early Chinese fans were made out of bamboo parts that were placed in a half circle with silk wrapped just about them. However, these fans did not fold up. Fans were chiefly held in reserve for royal families and members of the court and it was not until the Han dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.) that fans became generally accessible among the Chinese people. Fans became so trendy that in 317 - 420 A.D., the royal leader forbade them to be made out of silk since so not all can afford to have one made out of silk! Chinese fans were made in numerous different forms.

The Chinese, however, did not discover the folding edition of the fan. This type of fan, or called as Zhe Shan, was passed to China from Japan in the 11th century. Chinese wall fans grew beyond the area of being just ordinary household artifacts after it became integrated with conventional Chinese painting and calligraphy to pieces of artworks. Amongst the many number of fan artisans in historical Shanghai, only two remained today. The chief attraction of the Chinese wall fan nowadays is its worth as a collector's item, particularly for two types of Chinese wall fans --- the Tuan Shan (reunion fan) and the Zhe Shan (a plaited fan that can be folded).

Tuan Shan fans are produced out of silk and can either be round as well as square, or rectangular with rounded edges. They were used by both men and women such until the Ming dynasty when they became recognized as a fashion ornament for females. The Zhe Shan became well-liked in China during the Ming dynasty, getting a peak of fame during the Qing era. It is during this time that the folding fan became famous as a figure of social status. Also, during this time the tradition of using fan gestures as a manner to convey moods were developed.

While art and calligraphy were the chief reasons of embellishment, there are exemplars of fans that have gold or other precious stones surrounded to their surfaces. The additional time and attempt required to work on this sort of medium is the reason why decorated fans are mostly expensive. The Qing dynasty was also the period when the Chinese wall fan was first passed to Europe. Businessmen introduced fans made out of ivory which became in style among European women. As Chinese wall fans grew in fame and status in society, Chinese traders created and exported wall fans that are made of a variety of materials.

Fans nowadays are still on the runway as much as fashion is concerned. These wall fans are a fine way to be sure but there is more to it than that. There is something amazing about putting a fan at your wall. It could be a memento of history or that somewhat exotic sentiment you get when you unfold a fan. Much more to that, the Chinese wall fan is expected to enjoy a timeless recognition.
